The Market
At present, presentation control devices range in price from 35$ to 200$,
depending on brand and functionality. Some of them offer some sort of cursor
control; almost all offer integrated laser-pointers and SlideForward/SlideBack buttons.
The table below gives an snapshot overview (Dec 18th 2005).The Upoint
ultrasonic version is anticipated
to have a
BillOfMaterials somewhere between 10$ and 25$ and a retail price on the lower
end of the 50$-175$ range. The version with the laser distance sensor is
expected to have a retail price on the higher end of that scale. That is, Upoint will be positioned on the high end of the
present market-spectrum, and will be the only device that allows
direct-pointing 'laserpointer-like' cursor control, without confining the user
to any specific location in the room.
Market-size is expected to be as large as 100.000 units
annually. Indeed, annual sales for Gyration alone (manufacturer of GyroMouse)
total up to 3,6 million US$ (see excerpt from www.hoovers.com).
Note that Gyration was acquired by Thomson, apparently for a sum of 15 million
